Rising 2,250 feet from the canyon floor in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park , the Painted Wall stands against the forces of erosion as the highest cliff in Colorado. Like threads running through a piece of fabric, pink stripes lace the precipice. Made of pegmatite, a type of granite, this once molten magma squeezed into the main rock of the canyon like toothpaste from a tube. Starting two million years ago, the Gunnison River began grinding away at the rock, slicing down slowly as it carved the canyon. Today the pink pegmatite reveals many shapes throughout the canyon, but at the Painted Wall people often see dragons lifting off as they ascend to the top of the cliff.
