opening battle of the Civil War. The stars represented
even those states that had seceded from the Union.
The Stars and Bars was the first national flag of the Confederate
States of America. Its seven stars represented the
seven states that had seceded by March, 1861, when the
flag was adopted.
The Palmetto Flag was adopted as the official state flag
for South Carolina on January 26, 1861. The palmetto tree
commemorated the role of Fort Moultrie in the first major

of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia,
Louisiana, and Texas. The best-known flag was the
Battle Flag, also known as the Southern Cross. Carried
by Confederate troops in the field, this flag included 13
stars, representing the original seven states, plus Virginia,

This is an example of a marking sampler, usually one of the
first pieces a girl did in preparation for her duties as a wife and
mother. It taught her to stitch the alphabet so she could mark
her family's linens with initials and the date. Marking linens
allowed the woman to keep track of her linens. She could
rotate them to prevent them wearing out and, should they be
sent out for laundering, it would insure their prompt return.
This adaptation was designed for the Nantucket Historical
Association in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and is as close to

Lydia G. Cary was born on Nantucket on March 16, 1835 and died
on the island on February 23, 1905. She was the daughter of James
Cary and Margaret (Hussey) Cary. Her grandfather, James Cary, was
captain of the Rose, one of the most successful vessels in Nantucket's
China trade between 1803 and 1807. Lydia's original sampler is
now part of the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association

The Merium Patrick Sampler

Merium Patrick's sampler is a form typical of Shaker schoolgirl
needlework. It is plain and unadorned, quite a contrast to the elegant
pictorial embroidery practiced in the world. Samplers were part of
a young woman's instruction, even in Shaker communities. The
simple lettering practiced on Shaker samplers was also used to mark
linen, bedding, and clothing for the community.
Merium Patrick (1835-1910), Enfield, Connecticut. 1857 sampler
in linen, silk, cotton. The original sampler is in the collection of
